In the 120 years since the invention of cinematography, the participation of women in film has been conspicuously limited. Yet - when the feminine gaze has managed to manifest, it has been decisive, marking film history with an approach and vision that is sharp, sensitive, naked, detached and humble.
The people of Central America and the Caribbean, areas of the Americas with a population upwards of 88 million, are seeking to consolidate their identity through the moving image. Countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, among others, are developing a cinematography that sparks the attention of local audiences and international critics. This vibrant cinema - colorful, explosive, intimate, rhythmic, surreal - ushers a new age in the cultural and artistic landscape of this region.
It is therefore of seminal importance to support the female optic. This is an opportunity for a burgeoning industry to begin equitably. For this reason, the Fundación IFF Panama, continuing its commitment to the cinema of Central America and the Caribbean with it’s works in progress fund Primera Mirada (Works in Progress), creates Su Mirada (Her Vision), a seed fund for female filmmakers from Central America and the Caribbean.
Su Mirada/Her Vision seeks to balance the participation of women in the film industry of Central America and the Caribbean through a cash fund that supports women directors.
Su Mirada/Her Vision seeks the female optic for feature length films with a social perspective.
